Charlie Brooker’s Ready to Give Black Mirror a Sequel Episode

Every season, Netflix’s speculative fiction anthology series Black Mirror takes audiences on a roller coaster of concepts, characters, and worlds. Despite six seasons under its belt, creator Charlie Brooker hasn’t felt the need to dip into the sequel well–until the upcoming seventh season with another story about the USS Callister, that is.

During Netflix’s Geeked Week, Brooker spoke with Collider about why he decided to return to season four’s fan-favorite Star Trek riff. Apparently, he’s had a follow-up on the brain for a while, so it felt natural to continue their exploits. However, he admitted it was “quite difficult to get all the stars aligned. [But] we love the characters, and the cast were so great and just great people.” Since the episode left the door open for more adventures, how could he not take the opportunity?

The “Callister” episode ended with the titular crew—which included Lowry (Michaela Coel), Coel (Cristin Milioti), and Valdack (Billy Magnussen)—discovering they were digital clones of real-world people trapped inside a multiplayer game called Infinity run by the real-world version of their abusive captain Daly (Jesse Plemmons). After trapping Daly in the game, the crew’s in a “whole new frontier” with a massive “infinitely generated” universe to explore, according to Brooker.

Along with most of the original “Callister” cast, the new Black Mirror season will feature some returning faces behind the camera. The “Callister” sequel will bring back co-writer Will Bridges, while “Demon 79” co-writer Bisha K. Ali (who also wrote for Ms. Marvel) is coming back to helm another episode. Collaborating with them again has been “very exciting” for Brooker, and he’s high on the new season overall. “I think we’ve done it proud,” he teased.

Black Mirror will return with new episodes on Netflix in the near future.
